What are the Different Fish Breeding Strategies?
There are many ways in which fish breed these ways include:
Egg scatterers will scatter their eggs and as the male fertilizes them when they fall to the bottom. These types of fish will not have any role in their brood and they will eat their own eggs. the fish that breed in this way tend to live in groups or pairs and the female will produce hundreds to thousands of eggs which will all hatch relatively quickly as long as they have been fertilized and haven't been eaten.
Egg depositors will deposit their eggs on any substrate they can see which includes plants or rocks etc. these fish will produce a smaller number of eggs but the eggs they deposit are usually bigger than those of the egg layers. some egg layers will protect their eggs but others wont. these are know as cavity spawners, these deposit their eggs in a sheltered area like a cave while open spwaners will deposit their eggs on an open surface.
Egg burying fish tend to inhibit waters that dry up, these fish are annual killfish and will lay their eggs in mud, the parents will lay their eggs and often die themselves as the water drys up but the eggs will stay dormant until rain stimulates them hatching.
Mouth brooders fall into two categories, ovophile and larvophile. Ovophile mouth brooders will lay their eggs in a pit and then the female will pick them up in her mouth. The eggs will then hatch but the female will still keep them in her mouth for a period of time in order to keep them safe. she will not eat for around 30 days. Larvophile mouth brooders will lay their eggs on substrate and guard them until they hatch. The female will then pick up the fry and will keep them in her mouth until they can fend for themselves.
Nest builders usually build a bubble nest formed with plant debris and saliva-coated bubbles. an example of a nest building fish is the fighter fish. in this method the male will play an active part of brood care and rearing.
Livebearers are fish that bear live young there are also two types of live bearers, ovoviviparous and viviparous. Ovoviviparous breeding is where the eggs will form and hatch within the female before birth. Viviparous breeding is where no eggs are formed and the young are nourished through an umbilical like cord.
